Peter Jackson's King Kong / PC Port
The original Xbox 360 game code, translated to native PC code, with the launcher and the options of a modern PC release. No game files included: bring your own disc.
Backdrop: screenshots from the port, running on PC.
01 The port
In 2005 the Xbox 360 got the best King Kong of them all: better visuals, full facial animation and its own achievements. The PC got a lesser version.
This port takes the Xbox 360 game's own code and turns it into a native PC program. No emulator in between, and none of its freezes.
King Kong comes out on PC and every console of the time. The Xbox 360 edition is a launch title for the console.
On Xenia it boots, then stops for good at the ship's name, VENTURE, at the start of the first level.
Version 1.0. The Xbox 360 code, translated to native PC code with the ReXGlue SDK. The opening plays, and so does the rest.
A modern PC release: a launcher made for the couch, upscalers, ambient occlusion, achievements, Add to Steam.
A renderer of its own, native Linux and Steam Deck, and high frame rates done properly. See what's coming
02 The launcher
Set everything up before the game starts, with a controller, the keyboard or the mouse. It looks and sounds like the game, using your own copy of it. Try it: Q and E change pages, as in the launcher.

The first start asks for your copy of the game, with a card that says exactly which disc works. Pick your disc image and the launcher checks it, installs it and takes its artwork from it. Nothing from the game comes in the download.
Windowed or fullscreen, a window size that fits your screen, any monitor, VSync on or off (great off with G-Sync and FreeSync), and 16:9 with borders or stretched to fill.
The Original Xbox 360 look in one click, or Modern: presets from Low to Ultra and Steam Deck, AMD FSR 1 and NVIDIA NIS, supersampling, up to 8K, FXAA, 16x texture filtering and ambient occlusion.
Frame rate from 30, like the console, to 240 or unlimited. Camera shake and its strength, a field of view from 69° to 110°, the language, a frame counter, and the startup logos skipped or played.
Any controller, remapping, sensitivity, deadzone and vibration strength. Real mouse look and a modern keyboard layout. Button prompts that match your controller: Xbox 360, Xbox Series, PlayStation, Steam Deck or keyboard.
The game's own cheats as switches instead of codes to type every time: all chapters and bonus content, fast healing, one-hit kills, 999 bullets, unlimited spears and every gun.
All nine achievements with their pictures and gamerscore, and pop-ups in the Xbox 360's style or Steam's, with the sound of your choice. Plus a bonus one the first time you play.
The notes for every version, updates on a stable or a beta channel, the launcher's music and menu sounds, and your saves, game folder and settings file one click away.
03 Graphics
Drag across the picture to compare. Both shots are the V-Rex chapter at 2560 × 1440, half a second apart; only the setting changes.

Ambient occlusion adds soft shading where surfaces meet: in corners and creases, and under rocks, grass and people, so they sit in the scene instead of floating on it. It costs about 1 ms a frame at 4K.
Distance fog is part of Skull Island's look, so it's on by default. Off clears the haze over far scenery.
Upscalers, presets and the rest04 At a glance
Any resolution up to 7680 × 4320, windowed or fullscreen, on any monitor.
30 FPS like the console, or 60, 90, 120, 144, 165, 240 and unlimited.
AMD and NVIDIA upscaling on any graphics card, in four modes each.
Soft shading in corners and under rocks, grass and people, at three strengths.
The Xbox 360 look in one click, or presets from Low to Ultra and Steam Deck.
A field of view from the original 69° up to 110°.
Remap any button, or play with real mouse look and a modern keyboard layout.
Prompts that match your controller: Xbox 360, Xbox Series, PlayStation, Steam Deck or keys.
All nine, with pop-ups in the Xbox 360's style or Steam's.
All ten of the game's cheats, without typing the codes each time.
Pick your disc image and the launcher checks it and installs it in a few clicks.
New versions arrive in the launcher, on a stable or a beta channel.
One click puts it in your Steam library, with its artwork.
Through Proton today, as an experimental build. Native is on the way.
The freeze that stops emulators at the first level is fixed.

07 In development
Today the port still draws through an emulated Xbox 360 graphics chip. A native renderer on Vulkan is being built to replace it, and it already runs faster.

A real Linux version, no Proton needed.
The game's logic fixed to run correctly above 30 FPS. Real frames, not interpolated ones.
Shaders prepared from your own files at setup, so the first play-through runs smoothly too.
