How it was made
The game's own code, rebuilt for PC.
No emulator runs while you play. The Xbox 360 game is turned into a native PC program ahead of time, and everything modern is built on top of it.
01 Recompiled
From Xbox 360 code to a PC program.
The Xbox 360 runs PowerPC code. A recompiler reads the game's program from your own disc image and translates every function into code a PC processor runs directly. It happens once, before the game is ever started, so nothing has to be translated while you play.
The rest of the console, such as files, sound, controllers and threads, is provided by the runtime the port is built on. That is why the download has no game files: the launcher builds everything from your copy.
02 Rendered
Our own renderer.
The game asks the console's graphics chip to draw. Our renderer takes those requests and draws them with DirectX 12 or Vulkan, at your resolution, with the console's shaders translated for your graphics card.
On top of that it adds what the console never had: global illumination, ambient occlusion, sharper shadows, water reflections, HDR, ultrawide, and DLSS, FSR or XeSS.
03 Ready to play
No stutter the first time.
Every new combination of shader and settings costs the graphics card time to prepare, which shows as stutter. The launcher prepares them before you play, from a list the port ships with. Players can choose to share the combinations their game met, anonymously, and each version's list grows from them: 2.0.0 ships with 16,842.
04 Tested
How it is tested.
Scripted runs
Every change is played through by scripts on DirectX 12 and Vulkan, with the game's own captures checked.
A recorded route
The same route through the game is replayed to measure frame rate and stutter before and after a change.
Public test versions
17 beta versions went out before 2.0.0, and the community's reports shaped every one.
Optional reports
Players can send anonymous crash and performance reports. Many 2.0.0 fixes came straight from them.
