The basics
What is this, exactly?
Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie, the Xbox 360 edition, running natively on Windows and Linux. The Xbox 360 game's own code has been translated into native PC code with the ReXGlue SDK, drawn by a renderer of our own, with a modern launcher and PC options around it.
Is it an emulator?
No. The game's code runs as a native program, and our own renderer draws it with Vulkan or DirectX 12 instead of imitating the Xbox 360's graphics chip.
Why the Xbox 360 version, not the PC one from 2005?
The Xbox 360 edition was the best version of the game: better visuals, full facial animation and its own achievements. The 2005 PC release didn't get them. This port brings that version to PC.
Is it free?
Yes. It's a free fan project. You need your own copy of the game.
Who makes it?
TekRantGaming, with players who test it and report problems. Agentic AI tools were used to assist in its development. See the credits.
Version 2.0.0
When did version 2.0.0 come out?
On Friday 30 October 2026, for Windows and Linux, on the releases page. The launcher updates itself from 1.9.13: open it and choose Check for updates.
Is there co-op?
Yes: online co-op for two players, in early access. The host picks a chapter or a save, and a friend joins through Steam or with a code. See the co-op page.
Does my friend need their own copy of the game?
Yes. Each player needs their own copy of the game and the same version of the port.
Does it run on the Steam Deck?
Yes, with the Linux AppImage, from desktop mode or Steam's Game Mode, with its own graphics preset. See the Linux and Steam Deck page.
How do updates work?
The launcher offers each new version when it opens, and Update now installs it. Your installed game, saves and settings are kept.
Your copy of the game
Do I need the disc?
Yes, you need your own copy of the game. The download is just the port, without any game files. Make a disc image from your own Xbox 360 disc and the launcher installs the game from it.
Which disc works?
The Xbox 360 release for the USA and Europe, title ID 555307D3, version 0.0.0.1. The full details and checksums are on the install page.
Can I use the 2005 PC version instead?
No. The port is the Xbox 360 game, so it needs the Xbox 360 disc.
Where can I get the game files?
From your own disc, and nowhere else. The project doesn't share game files and can't help find them, so please don't ask in the Discord or on GitHub.
Is it legal?
The port is a fan project that contains only its own code: no game code, no game assets. You bring your own copy of the game. Whether you may make a disc image of a disc you own depends on where you live, and we can't give legal advice on that. King Kong and the game belong to their owners; see the legal notice.
Playing
How do I start, pause and save?
The launcher is the game's main menu: press Play and choose Continue, New game, Load game, Chapter select or Extras. In the game, Start or Esc opens the pause menu, with Save game where the game offers it, Load last checkpoint and the settings that change while you play. The pause menu.
When does the game save?
When you choose Save game, and when you quit from the pause menu with Quit to main menu or Quit game. Checkpoints are not saves. If you close the window another way, for example with Alt+F4, progress since your last save is lost.
Does it run on Linux?
Yes, natively. There is a Linux AppImage with the Vulkan renderer next to the Windows download. Here is how to install it.
Does it run on the Steam Deck?
Yes. Add the Linux AppImage to Steam as a non-Steam game and play it in Game Mode. There is a Steam Deck graphics preset and Steam Deck button prompts. Handhelds and the Steam Deck.
Is there a Mac version? What about Arm?
A Mac version is planned, and it may also lead to Arm builds. Until then, Windows on Arm PCs can try the Windows version through Prism.
Does it play well above 30 FPS?
Yes. Remastered plays at 60 FPS, and the game's animations, physics and effects run right at 60, 120, 144 and beyond, with real frames and no frame generation. A few character animations are not quite right above 30. The Original look keeps the console's 30. More about frame rates.
Are there HD textures?
Yes. Setup offers the HD texture pack, and the Workshop has Kong UHD Textures and the Comic Book Texture Pack, with room for your own. The texture packs.
Can I play with a controller? With keyboard and mouse?
Both. Any controller works, with remapping and button prompts that match it. Keyboard and mouse get a modern layout and real mouse look, and every control can be rebound.
Do achievements go to Xbox Live or Steam?
No, they're the port's own. You see them in the launcher, with pop-ups in the game in the Xbox 360's style or Steam's.
What's Quiver?
Quiver Launcher lists the port, and its page shows how it runs for other players. It's another place to find the port and see how others get on; the download itself is on GitHub.
Privacy
Does the port send anything online?
Only what you allow. Online players sends a tiny anonymous check-in while it is on, plus anonymous graphics data, a performance summary and crash reports that help the game run well. Discord status only talks to the Discord app on your PC. Exactly what is sent.
When something goes wrong
How do I report a problem?
Open an issue on GitHub or ask in the Discord, with the files from the logs folder next to king_kong.exe. The details.
Will updating lose my saves?
No. Updates replace only the port's own files; your installed game, saves and settings stay as they are, and your saves are also copied to a backup folder before you play.
